How Long Does It Take to Dry Out a Crawl Space?
Updated: 3 days ago
After a dehumidifier is installed you will usually see a reduction in humidity almost immediately, and on average we can stabilize the complete environment in under three days.
There is one situation where I will deliberately go slower than that, and I want to explain it, because if it happens on your house I do not want you thinking something went wrong.'
The normal case: under three days
A properly sized unit in a properly sealed crawl space starts pulling moisture out of the air the moment it comes on. The numbers move fast.
Getting the whole environment stable, meaning the far corners and not just the area around the unit, usually takes under three days. That is what the dehumidistat fans are for. They help push the dry air out to the extremities rather than letting it pool in the middle.
The case where I slow it down on purpose
Sometimes I get under a house and the moisture content in the structural wood, the joists and the beams holding your floor up, is at a very high level.
When that happens I prefer to dry it out slowly. That process can take several weeks instead of three days.
I know that is not the answer anybody wants. You paid for a dehumidifier and you want the number to drop. But pulling moistu//re out of saturated structural wood too fast is not good for the wood, and those joists are holding up your floor.
So you will not get the immediate effect. Trust me that it is the better solution for the long term health and quality of your home.
What you should expect to see
A real drop in the humidity reading within the first day. A stable environment inside a week in most houses. And if I have told you we are going slow, a gradual change over several weeks with a reason I explained to you before we started, not after.
If somebody installed a unit and nothing changed at all, that is a different conversation. Either the unit is undersized for the space, or the crawl space is not actually sealed, or there is water still coming in that no dehumidifier is going to keep up with.
